Following the calls for the third anniversary of the downing of the flight PS752, Iranians took to the streets on Sunday evening, January 8th.
The protests continued in various cities inside Iran, including Tehran, Qazvin, Gohardasht, Karaj, Anzali, Isfahan, Mashhad and Sanandaj. Protesting against the recent executions, people chanted “death to the republic of execution.” As well, Iranians outside the country marched in over 70 cities worldwide to show their support for the uprising in Iran and to commemorate the victims of flight PS752.
Hamed Esmaeilion, the president and spokesman of The Association of Victims' Families of Flight PS752 asked the Canadian government to recognize IRGC as a terrorist organization and expel the representative of the Islamic Republic in ICAO and the oligarchs and agents of the Islamic Republic in Canada. "Ali Khamenei should be sanctioned like Putin," Esmaeilion stated.
Iranian film critic and director, Mohsen Jafari-Rad, who had been arrested during anti-government protests a few weeks ago, committed suicide after being released.
There have been reports of a number of political prisoners committing suicide shortly after their release in recent months. It is suspected that strong drugs are given to detainees which may cause suicidal tendencies once they stop using them.
According to the opposition activist collective “1500tasvir,” Mohammad Qobadlou and Mohammad Boroughani have been transferred to solitary confinement to execute the death sentence. People gathered in front of the prison entrance to protest and prevent the possible executions.
West Condemns the Executions
The politicians around the world have condemned the recent executions of two protesters.
Ned Price, the spokesperson of the US Department of State, stated that Washington condemns "the sham trials and execution of Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Seyed Mohammad Hosseini" by the Islamic Regime in the strongest terms, noting: "These executions are a key part of the regime's effort to suppress protests."
“Over 40 members of the french senate have supported the motion that requires the European Union to end the talks to restore the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), list the IRGC as a terrorist organization, and shut down Iranian banks in the EU countries and close its airspace to Iranian flights for fundamental human rights violations,” said Nathalie Goulet a member of the Senate of France. She along with her colleagues in the upper house of the French Parliament proposed this motion. The European affairs committee of the Senate will work on this resolution over the next ten days, she added.
Norbert Röttgen, member of the German Parliament (Bundestag) in a tweet after the executions said Germany and the EU must “finally start taking decisive actions to protect the 19000 other prisoners.” As well, another German MP, Hannah Neumann, said in a tweet that the regime “will not stop with more talks and red carpets. We need to send a clear signal and treat them as what they are: terrorists.”
